Join us as we discuss Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. In a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield, readers are swept to the storied mountains of southern Appalachia, where Damon Fields is born to a single teen mother living in rundown trailer. With nothing to his name save for his dead father’s good looks, copper-colored hair, and biting wit, Damon relies on his fierce talent for survival. Unflinching in his voice, he conveys a tale fraught with broken systems, addiction, star-crossed love, and poverty. Through it all, Damon reckons with a world in which his plight and that of those around him is swept under the rug in a culture more focused on Hollywood than hollers.
